Today we are discussing homemaking and motherhood with Lara d’Entremont, whose writing on the weight of both external and self-imposed pressure on new moms gave me so much to think about.
What a wonderful interview with such a thoughtful mother. It sounds like Lara's wisdom about things taking time has come from growing into herself through motherhood, too! Such an amazing part of this vocation -- it's like it's tailor-made to bring us both into ourselves and out of ourselves.
Thank you for those kind words. I love what you said at the end about how motherhood is "tailor-made to bring us both into ourselves and out of ourselves." So true!
Yes! Definitely deliberate design in there. It's also humbling to pause and consider how the various struggles and difficulties of motherhood and marriage that I've faced have been exactly the issues my own heart needs to work on.
The point about our internal perspective and attitude, along with honoring our limitations in order to carry out our callings well..... so good, so wise, so difficult oftentimes.
"We must keep our eyes set on what God has called each of us to—not that mother or this woman—but what lot he has drawn for us and what resources he has put in our hands."
^ Need a tattoo of this. (Or maybe just a post-it.)
It is so easy to forget that both we and our children (and spouses) are unique individuals, and that it is important to understand yourself and other people as they are *in reality.* Someone very wise in my life says that “we have two ears and one mouth so we should listen twice as much as we talk” - and I think truly listening is one of the under-appreciated skills of motherhood.
I love this, Ivana. I likewise struggle to listen more than I talk, and I think a number of my difficulties with my little ones could be resolved if I listened more closely to what they were communicating in words and body language.
Thank you for your kind words, Haley! I feel like that would be a very long and painful tattoo 😂 But in all seriousness, I do need to remind myself of this daily, because I so easily get caught up in comparison and judging myself based on what another mother is able to do with her time and resources, rather than the specific life God has given me. It's such a battle!
Isn’t amazing how much growth happens in *you* when you are trying to nurture your children? (Or at least in *me* 😂)
Yes! Sometimes I feel like I'm the one doing the most growing and changing haha!

I really marvel at how good marriage and motherhood can be for our souls, although it also comes with its own temptations to do and accept evil.
It's almost like it was deliberately designed that way ;)

Loved this, Lara!
