I hope that there is some common ground between the two sides but it is hard to see it. In my Democrat controlled state the regulations(advanced college degrees, etc.) for small daycare have become so high that nearly all the daycares/ in home daycares have shut down in the rural area where I live. And the Democrats don't seem to want to budge on this. Maybe these policies are working in the cities but certainly not here. It is small policies like this that we really need to see a coming together and creating reasonable and common sense solutions.

Super fascinated by the left-right language differences. I couldn't articulate it before reading this, but I think this is why when I read something like Elissa Strauss' book "When You Care," I got the sense that she was making a fundamentally conservative (lower case "c," not conservative as in Republican) argument, but making it (via language choice) to a liberal audience. Super interesting.

I haven't even read her book but knowing what I know about it, this 100% was my unarticulated thought as well. haha

I should clarify that this is not a criticism of the book. If anything, I wish there were more people sufficiently versed in cross-aisle language to translate ideas from one group to another. So, just an observation

I'm also fascinated by the claim of politicized language here. I'm not a conservative, except with regard to this very issue of mothers and families. I have heard of that book, but avoided putting it on my to-read list because the (apparently left-coded) umbrella term "care" made me expect it would efface and devalue my unique relationship as a mother. It sounds like not so much?

I loved this so much! Very clarifying. So much of our use of certain language communicates messages both implicit and explicit, so I appreciate teasing some of that out in order to find common ground.

I appreciate the nuance! I’m a working mom of 3 who would love to go part time. But it’s just not feasible if I want to afford things like health and dental care. I’m middle aged and had kids post 08 crisis. We’ve always needed two incomes and we are more fortunate than most.
